Opening Ceremonies Guest Speaker - Friday June 19
Nancy Greene Raine
Nancy will draw on her back ground in Olympic skiing, small business ownership and her time in the Senate to present different concepts of leadership. From a coaches role in developing athletes, to a small business owner’s role in building and leading a team of employees, to a Senator’s role in government, Nancy will give her insight into the qualities required for effective leadership. She will explore the different ways there are to lead in any organization or group. Nancy believes that anyone can be a leader, even if at first it is only by sharing their experience to help co-workers. She will also connect the way exceptional leaders never stop learning, and how they grow by taking advantage of net-working opportunities.
Nancy Greene's ski racing career peaked in 1967 and 1968 when she won gold and silver medals at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics and the overall World Cup title both years.
In 1999 Nancy was named Canada's Female Athlete of the 20th Century recognizing her life-long contribution to the promotion of skiing and her continued support of amateur sports. (Wayne Gretsky was her male counterpart.)
After 25 years in Whistler where Nancy and her husband Al Raine were recognized for their role in the critical startup phase of Whistler Resort, the Raines moved to Sun Peaks in the mid 1990s where they have continued to be leaders in building, not just the mountain resort, but also the community.
Nancy has been Director of Skiing for the resort, a role that includes marketing and guest relations.
In January 2009, Nancy was appointed to represent British Columbia in the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Nancy retired from the Senate in May 2018 but her Child Health Protection bill (S-228) is awaiting final approval in the Senate.
As Director of Skiing, Nancy still enjoys skiing with skiing with resort guests and can be found on the mountain most days of the week. Meanwhile husband Al is also very active, both in his lifestyle and as Mayor of Sun Peaks, the fastest growing community in British Columbia.
